My mom was always late.
I remember waiting at the door while she changed outfits. I never understood why she couldn’t just get ready and leave on time!
I would grumble under my breath, and just as I was about to give up and settle down on the couch, she would say, “I’m ready. Chalo chalo, let’s go.”
But as I ran down the stairs, I’d realise she still hadn’t exited the house! As always, she would appear 5 minutes later saying, “I was just locking up.”
How annoying!
But just the other day, I did the exact same thing. My husband and kids were ready and waiting, and I told them to head downstairs, and I’d meet them in a minute.
As I entered the restroom and sat down, it finally struck me... My mom was never late because she was locking up.
She was late because she was doing a “just-in-case” pee to prevent an unexpected urine leak later!
I couldn’t believe it! My mom had kept this secret from me for so many years, and I never once thought that the fear of urine leakage was as a possible reason for her delays.
Now that I’m 42, and I've also started experiencing urine leaks, I finally see the many little secrets my mom had to keep just to hide her big secret about urine leaks.
The extra underwear in every bag. Throwing away all her naada pants for elasticated ones. Refusing to drink water or cold drinks whenever we went out. And, of course, running up the stairs ahead of everyone else saying, “I’ll just go ahead and unlock the door.”
Back then, none of it made any sense to me. But when I started modifying my routines just to avoid urine leaks, I understood that my mom didn’t hide her incontinence intentionally.
Even though 1 in 3 women above the age of 40 experience urine leaks, most women don’t talk about it, even with their partner or children.
Honestly, even I was too afraid to tell my husband, so I confided in my friends. And I was surprised to learn that even they had urine leaks. One of them had had them since she gave birth, and the other said her leaks began when menopause started.
But they didn’t seem to be making adjustments like I was. While I was still carrying “just-in-case panties” and doing “just-in-case pees,” they just seemed... normal.
I finally asked them, “How are you both so... normal about this?”
One of them smiled and said, “You should try Friends Dry Pants. They’ve really helped me!”
So I did. I wore them the next time I went out.
I was halfway through my day when I suddenly felt a sneeze coming. Before I could even reach for a tissue, I sneezed.
And there it was... that familiar little rush.
My heart sank.
Oh no. My clothes.
Instinctively, I thought about where I could find a bathroom, whether I’d need to change, and how I was going to manage the rest of the day.
But when I checked, there was no wet patch!
No dampness. Nothing.
I was absolutely stunned!
The leak had happened. I had felt it happen. But my clothes were completely dry.
I carried on with my day, still a little surprised by what had just happened.
Through the rest of the day, each time I felt a leak coming, I instinctively panicked. But each time, I realised that I had stayed completely dry!
That was when I started to feel like the spare underwear in my bag might be a little unnecessary.
Maybe I didn’t need to do that “just-in-case” pee before every outing either.
Maybe I could have my coffee without calculating how quickly I’d need to find a bathroom afterwards.
I still thought about my bladder, of course. But I didn’t have to keep rearranging my day around the possibility of a leak.
It was on my third or fourth outing wearing Friends Dry Pants that I found myself thinking about my mom and her silent struggle.
All those “just-in-case” things suddenly looked different to me.
Maybe she wasn’t trying to hide a secret from me. Maybe she was just trying to get through her day without anyone knowing what she was dealing with.
I wish she’d had Friends she could trust back then. Maybe she wouldn’t have had to hide at all.
Now that I’ve discovered Friends Dry Pants, I’m done with my “just-in-case” adjustments.
I’ve got Friends now, so I’m comfortable and confident in any case!
