Incontinence is a health issue in which the person loses control over their bladder or bowel movements. There are two types of incontinence, bowel and urinary incontinence. It can be managed with urinary catheters and adult diaper pants. But its treatment is unavoidable, as it not only affects the quality of life but also leads to issues like skin infections and depression.

Any health condition, be it minor or major, can be disastrous, if not treated at the right time.

The treatment of incontinence depends on the root cause, the extent to which it affects the person, the type of incontinence, and the person themselves. In some cases, it can be untreatable and the only option left would be managing their incontinence. However, if one detects any signs of incontinence, the first thing to do is consult a doctor for medical advice. If treatable, finding out the right treatment options should be the highest priority.

Here are the treatment options for incontinence, that everyone should know of/about:

1. Bladder Training

This training involves the concept of holding the urine in for around 10 minutes every time you get the urge to urinate, just to ensure that you urinate once every 2-4 hours.

2. Double voiding

This involves the practice of trying to empty the bladder completely by urinating and then waiting for a few minutes, to try once again.

3. Kegel exercises

Kegel exercises help to strengthen the Pelvic floor muscles that control one’s bladder movements. It is highly effective in cases of urge and stress incontinence. When you try to stop the flow of urine, your bladder muscles tend to contract. Kegel exercises are, basically, the act of pulling in and squeezing those muscles for 10 seconds and then resting for 10 seconds. Doing 3-4 sets of 10 repetitions every day is highly advised. The best thing about kegel exercises is that one can do it anywhere, be it a bedroom, an office space, or a car.

4. Fluid and diet management

As self-explanatory as it is, this involves managing diet and fluid intake by avoiding the foods or drinks that catalyze incontinence, like excess Vitamin C, spicy foods, acidic foods, and alcohol.

5. Medication

Other than exercises, some treatments of incontinence also involve medication. The medications mainly used to treat incontinence are anticholinergics, imipramine, alpha blockers, mirabegron, and topical estrogen. However, it is a must to consult a doctor first, in order to determine which one(s) the patient should have.

6. Medical Devices

There are several groundbreaking devices designed to treat incontinence in women, namely urethral insert, botox, bulking agents, radiofrequency therapy, and pessary.

7. Surgery

If the problem of incontinence is severe, doctors try therapies. If these do not work, they can recommend surgical treatments like sling procedures, artificial sphincter, prolapse surgery, and bladder neck suspension. Since the treatment of incontinence is largely dependent on the underlying cause and the idea is to treat the cause, in order to get rid of incontinence. These surgical treatments treat the underlying causes that lead to incontinence.

Doctors decide which treatment options one should go for depending on various factors; their age, mental health, the type of incontinence, and the severity of the issue. If it is mild, they suggest exercises and light medications. However, if it is severe, they might go for surgical treatments or therapies.

So, if your relative or friend is suffering from urinary incontinence, regardless of the type, suggest them to manage it with the best adult diapers available at Friends Adult Diapers until they visit a specialist to decide the treatment options for their incontinence. Moreover, encourage them to be vocal about it, without feeling any worry or embarrassment.
