What is a neurogenic bladder?
Your urinary system has a bladder, ureters, urethra, kidneys and lots of nerves. These organs help make, store, and pass urine. Think of your bladder as a hollow, round container. The job of this container is to store urine produced in the body. Another job that the bladder performs is to let the urine out of the body when it receives a signal from the brain and the spinal cord. The bladder is held in place by pelvic muscles in the lower region of your belly. When the urine produced by the kidneys reaches your bladder it expands like a balloon. The bladder deflates when the urine is let out.
You know your bladder is reaching its limit because of the nerve signals that reach the brain. Once the message reaches your brain, it isn’t long before you rush to the bathroom to pee. When you make it to a bathroom safely in time and are ready to urinate, the brain tells the bladder muscles to squeeze or contract themselves. The urine goes out through your urethra which has sphincter muscles. The sphincter muscles keep the urethra closed so you are not pissing your pants all the time.
A neurogenic bladder or as a layman would say it a ‘neurological bladder’ is what happens when the relationship between your nervous system and bladder becomes skewed. A neurogenic bladder can keep you from having normal bladder control.
Neurogenic bladder is a very common condition that people with spinal cord injuries suffer with. This condition also affects people who have multiple sclerosis, stroke, Parkinson’s disease and other neurological conditions. Conditions that damage nerves such as advanced diabetes also cause a neurogenic bladder.
Neurogenic Bladders and its Types
Here is a neurogenic bladder classification for you:
An overactive bladder causes you to lose control over your urinary activities. It can also cause you to feel sudden, frequent and often uncontrollable urges to urinate. Overactive bladder in men is more common than in women.
An underactive bladder is a condition which occurs when your bladder muscles are no longer able to hold your urine. You’re unable to sense when you need to pee, so the bladder fills itself with more urine than it can hold. This results in leaks and accidents.
Overflow Incontinence due to a Neurogenic Bladder
In a neurogenic bladder, overflow incontinence becomes the most common complication. It occurs when you leak or dribble pee because your bladder is full beyond its capacity. Some people might even experience overflow incontinence because they can't empty their bladder all the way when they pee.
An overactive bladder might be the most inconvenient thing you have ever experienced. You’re rushing to the bathroom every two seconds or waking up in the middle of the night to pee.
