“Diapers are to be worn all day. Six hours, eight hours – there is wetness, sweating, urine leakage. Of course rashes will occur!”

This is what Mr Rai Chaudhry from West Bengal had to say about the use of diapers before he tried Friends Adult Diapers. But, post his product usage, he is a changed man. "I have learnt that incontinence management can be effortless! And diaper rashes? Completely manageable!"

How did we change his mind? Through facts. Come, let us change yours too.

WHAT ARE ADULT DIAPER RASHES?

Inflamed, red and irritated skin? Probably Adult diaper rashes or Diaper Dermatitis.

Commonly known because of all the 'shishu ki komal twacha' baby diaper advertisements on TV, diaper rashes for adults suffering from urine leakage are a common and unfortunate occurrence, too!

Diaper rashes are most commonly seen in the areas of the skin covered by a diaper, such as one's genitals, inner thighs and buttocks. The most common diaper rash symptoms in adults are as follows:

  • angry spotting

  • red skin

  • peeling of the skin

  • skin that is very tender to the touch or pains

  • irritation

CAUSES OF DIAPER RASHES

Diaper rashes are painful and uncomfortable and can hamper a person's lifestyle. Why are they caused?

  • Friction: It could become tender and irritated as the skin rubs against coarse or netted diaper surfaces. This is similar to chafing women experience from the use of sanitary products.

  • Wetness: Failure to change the diaper for prolonged periods or the diaper's incapability to soak urine thoroughly is a common cause of rashes and tenderness.

  • Harsh Elastic: Harsh elastic materials can dig into the skin. This can also occur if users wear a diaper in the wrong size, leading to diaper rashes.

  • Chemicals: Harmful chemicals such as artificial fragrances, sulphur or chemical bleaches used in diapering products can also irritate the fragile skin of the genital area and cause patches of redness and irritation.

GENERAL PRACTICES TO AVOID DIAPER RASHES

The primary rule to avoid diaper rashes would be to use the correct diaper! So, when purchasing your diaper, make sure your diaper:

  • Is chemical/paraben/artificial fragrance and bleach-free

  • It has a soft, cotton-finish top layer that is gentle on your skin.

  • It fits you correctly as diapers that are too tight may cause sweating or stress to the skin.

  • It is absorbent enough. Diapers that fail to absorb urine matter would cause its pooling on the surface level. When left in prolonged contact with the skin, this would increase the occurrence of diaper rashes.

Friends Adult Diapers are enriched with aloe vera, jojoba, and chamomile extracts. This makes sure that your skin remains nourished, moisturized and safe from diaper rashes.

Remember that adult diaper rash treatment is straightforward if you still suffer from these rashes. They are completely curable and usually heal within a few days with simple precautions.

Here's what to do for rashes on private parts:

  • To prevent adult diaper rashes, your best bet is to keep the diaper area clean and dry. Try not to wear the same diaper for too long. Use products like petroleum jelly to help lock the moisture out of the area. At the next diaper change, you can gently rub the jelly off with a cotton ball.

  • Adult diaper rashes can be avoided by simply airing out the diaper area. Fresh air blowing on the inflamed skin will aid the healing of the rash. Do this by not wearing a diaper for short intervals, say 10- 15 minutes, a few times throughout the day. In addition to this, you can size up in your diapers for a while and wear loose clothes to avoid chafing and further help in the healing process.

  • Diaper rash creams and lotions- Many over-the-counter medications are available commercially for diaper rashes. Apply a thin layer of the cream to the affected area; you can even apply a layer of petroleum jelly to prevent the clothes from sticking to the cream. This is your answer, especially if you have constantly been googling "what to do for rashes on your inner thighs".

  • Maintain hygiene, even while you're suffering from a rash! Be gentle with your skin and avoid scrubbing it; use warm water and a fragrance-free mild soap to prevent further irritation. Your thighs, buttocks and genitals are the perfect places for bacterial or fungal infections since they are dark, moist and often get sweaty. No more nasty fungal infections in your privates!

HOME REMEDIES TO YOUR RESCUE

Some home remedies for diaper rash in adults are very popular and good, since they are effective, affordable, and easy to use. Here are a few for you:

  • Coconut oil for diaper rash - Coconut oil is the holy grail in many Indian households. Known for its soothing properties, it has proven effective in healing adult diaper rashes for many. It also keeps moisture out of the inflammation. Pour some oil into your hands and gently rub it in the areas with the rashes. You can use a cotton ball to gently clean it away on the following diaper change.

  • Vinegar – Using vinegar sound a little daunting? Hear us out. Urine is highly alkaline; it can even burn the skin just like acid if your skin is exposed to it for an extended period. To balance out the pH, rinse your reusable diapers in a water solution and half a cup of white vinegar, and leave the diaper to dry entirely for reuse. This ensures that the pH level is maintained and kills harmful bacteria and other pathogens, keeping you well-protected on all fronts.

  • Aloe Vera – Aloe Vera is the most versatile medicinal plant there is. It is anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and instantly cools down inflamed skin. Snip off a leaf from your plant at home, cut it open and scoop the gel out to apply to the irritated skin. You can buy a bottle of Aloe Vera gel from the market but make sure it does not contain any ingredients that can further irritate the skin. Aloe Vera will relieve your diaper rash in just a few uses.

Did you know that Friends Adult diapers have the goodness of jojoba and aloe vera to make your butt smooth like a baby's? It absorbs wetness better than a sponge and turns the fluid into a gel. The top layer is made with the softest material to ensure that you don't have to use these remedies!
