Your body goes through a great deal of changes as you get older. In many men, their prostate increases in size as they age which leads to an blockage in the flow of urine from the bladder (which stores it) through the urethra (which is the pipe that expels it). However, most men remain unaware of this change occurring inside their body.

“I didn’t know what was going on with my father when he stopped going out with us, he would also sit in the washroom for 30 minutes! After much coaxing, he told us that he was leaking a few drops of urine every now and then and had to force himself to properly urinate” says Parvathi Hariharan, a 28-year old homemaker from Lucknow. “It was only after things got much worse did he agree to go see a doctor. And we got to know that his prostate had grown much out of proportion. It had to be surgically removed. I wish we had paid better attention,” expresses Parvathi.

Let’s find out what this is and learn more about prostate gland enlargement symptoms in this blog.

What is Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (Enlarged Prostate)?

The prostate gland in men is located just below the bladder and surrounds the top portion of urethra, a pipe-like organ that drains urine from the bladder.

When the prostate gland becomes enlarged or swollen it squeezes the urethra, nearly shutting it—obstructing the free flow of urine. This condition is called Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH).

The causes of BPH are not well understood, however it is believed that aging and changes in levels of the male hormone androgen contribute to it.

Who does Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia affect?

Men with the following factors are more likely to develop benign prostatic hyperplasia:

How common is Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia?

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia or BPH is a common condition among older men. The prostate gland continues to grow throughout their life in men, and this is completely normal. But sometimes, things can get out of hand.

About 50% of men between the ages of 51 and 60 have BPH. This number is even higher for men above 60 years of age. While not every man who has BPH experiences bothersome symptoms, for many it causes problems with urination. Let’s go through swollen prostate symptoms so you know what to look out for.
